Homework goes more smoothly when the place, the supplies and the time are already decided. A homework station is all three.
Choose the spot together
Some children focus best at a desk in their room; many younger children do better at the kitchen table near an adult. Pick a place with good light and few distractions, and use it every day.
Stock a portable caddy
Keep the daily tools in one caddy: sharpened pencils, an eraser, a ruler, colored pencils, glue, scissors, a calculator for older children and a few sheets of paper. A caddy can travel if the table is needed for dinner. The School Supply Station covers the bigger project supplies.
Add a simple folder system
One folder for “to do” and one for “done, goes back to school”. Finished work goes straight into the bag.
Keep the same time
A regular time, perhaps after a snack in the first hour home, takes the argument out of starting. Use a timer for short focused bursts with a break.
Plan for siblings
If children work together, give each their own caddy and space. Older siblings can help younger ones for a few minutes, which often helps both.
Close down the station
At the end: pencils back, work in the bag, tomorrow’s requirements checked. A picture card made with the routine card maker can show the steps.
