The family car quietly fills with wrappers, toys, shoes and receipts. A few small kits and a regular reset keep it usable.
Keep a kit for each zone
- Front: phone charger, tissues, a pen and a small notebook, sunglasses.
- Back seats: a seat-back organizer with a book or two, wipes and a small bag for rubbish.
- Boot: a first aid kit, a blanket, a spare change of clothes for younger children, reusable shopping bags and a warning triangle if required where you live.
Secure heavy items
Loose heavy items can become dangerous in a sudden stop. Keep heavy things in the boot or secured, and keep the floor clear around car seats.
Use a car bin
A small lidded bin or a bag hung on a headrest makes rubbish easy to collect.
The five-minute reset
After every long drive, or once a week: rubbish out, toys and shoes back into the house, wipe sticky spots and restock wipes and tissues. Children can bring their own things in.
Check car seats regularly
Make sure car seats are installed correctly and suit each child’s height and weight. Many local fire stations and child passenger safety technicians can check them.
Never leave a child in the car
Cars heat up quickly, even on mild days. Make it a habit to check the back seat every time you get out.
