Moving with children is easier when the work is spread over several weeks and the children know what is happening. This timeline is a starting point to adapt.
Eight weeks before
- Book movers or a van, and get quotes in writing.
- Tell your children, simply and honestly, and answer their questions.
- Contact the new school and arrange records transfer.
- Start decluttering: what you do not move, you do not pack. Use the donation station.
Six weeks before
- Collect boxes, tape and markers.
- Start packing rooms you use least.
- Arrange to transfer or set up utilities and internet.
Four weeks before
- Notify banks, employers, doctors, insurers and subscriptions of your new address. In the US, you can change your address with the Postal Service online.
- Book time off for moving day.
- Arrange childcare for moving day if possible.
Two weeks before
- Pack room by room. Label each box with the room and a short contents list.
- Let children pack a box of their own favorite things.
- Use up frozen and pantry food.
Moving week
- Pack a first-night box: bedding, pajamas, toothbrushes, medicines, chargers, toilet paper, snacks, kettle, a few toys and a nightlight.
- Pack a bag for each person with clothes for two days.
- Take photos of how electronics are connected.
In the new home
Set up the children’s bedrooms first; familiar bedding and toys help them settle. Keep meal and bedtime routines as normal as you can. Our free moving checklist turns this into a dated list for your move.
