Camping trips take ages to pack when the gear is spread around the house. Three labeled tubs that stay packed between trips change that.
Tub 1: Kitchen
Stove and fuel stored as the manufacturer directs, a pot and pan, utensils, plates, cups, a chopping board, a washing-up bowl, dish soap, a sponge, tea towels, a lighter or matches in a waterproof container and rubbish bags.
Tub 2: Camp
Lanterns and flashlights with spare batteries, a first aid kit, tent repair kit, mallet and spare pegs, rope, duct tape, a multi-tool, insect repellent and sun cream.
Tub 3: Comfort
Tablecloth, a small rug, games and cards, a few books, a washing line and pegs, and wipes.
Pack the big items separately
Tent, sleeping bags, mats and chairs live together on one shelf or in one corner of the garage.
Keep a checklist in each tub
Tape a list inside each lid. After a trip, check the list, restock what was used and replace anything broken before putting the tub away.
Store the tubs with the seasonal gear
Keep the tubs together in the garage or loft, using the seasonal family gear system. Add food, clothes and the packing list for each trip.
Check the tubs before the season
At the start of each camping season, open every tub and test the stove, lanterns and batteries at home. Discovering a broken lantern in the dark is no fun. Note anything to replace on the lid list, and keep a copy of the checklist on your phone for the shop. The free home maintenance checklist is a handy seasonal reminder.
