A children’s party is a lot of small decisions. Working back from the date, and keeping it simpler than you first imagined, makes it fun for everyone, including you.
Six weeks before
- Pick the date, time and length. Two hours is plenty for younger children.
- Decide the guest list. A common rule of thumb is the child’s age plus one, but do what suits your space and budget.
- Book a venue or decide on home.
- Choose a simple theme if your child wants one.
Four weeks before
- Send invitations with a reply date. Ask about allergies on the reply.
- Plan two or three activities and a game for when children arrive.
- Order a cake or plan to bake one.
Two weeks before
- Buy decorations, tableware and party bag items.
- Plan the food: easy finger food and fruit go further than complicated dishes.
- Confirm numbers and any helpers.
The week before
- Chase replies, prepare the party bags and make a short schedule for the day.
- Clear space and put away anything precious.
On the day
Arrival activity, games, food, cake, and a calm activity before pick-up. Keep a first aid kit and a list of parents’ phone numbers handy.
Afterwards
Help your child write thank-you notes. Our free party planner turns this into a dated checklist for your date.
