An advent calendar can be a lovely daily ritual, or one more thing to remember every night. The trick is to plan it all in advance and keep each day small.
Choose activities over things
An activity calendar fills December with time together rather than more items. Write each day’s activity on a slip and put it in a numbered pocket, bag or envelope.
Ideas that take ten minutes or less
- Read a winter story together
- Make paper snowflakes for the window
- Drink hot chocolate by candlelight (with a battery candle) at a hot cocoa bar
- Write a card to a grandparent
- Have a family dance party to a holiday song
- Make a paper chain
- Choose a toy to donate
- Drive or walk to see the lights
- Build a blanket fort and watch a holiday movie
- Bake one batch of cookies
Plan around your calendar
Look at December first. Put the bigger activities on weekends and the quickest ones on busy school nights. Leave a few “rest” days with just a small treat or a joke.
Reuse the container
Fabric bags, a wooden calendar or envelopes on a string can be reused every year. Store them with the decorations in the seasonal gear system.
Keep it flexible
If a day does not work, swap it. The calendar is there to help you enjoy the season, not to add pressure. For the rest of the season, see the holiday prep checklist.
